Religion Personal Roles
Piety
Insufficient, The

Religion Personal Roles You respect God and live right, so don’t lose hope! Job 4:6 Natural perception If you want to learn, then go and ask the wild animals and the birds, the flowers and the fish. Any of them can tell you what the Lord has done. Every living creature is in the hands of God. We hear with our ears, taste with our tongues, and gain some wisdom from those who have lived a long time. But God is the real source of wisdom and strength. No one can rebuild what he destroys, or release those he has imprisoned. God can hold back the rain or send a flood, just as he rules over liars and those they lie to. Job 12:7-16 Religion personal roles without reality You may think you are on the right road and still end up dead.

Proverbs 14:12 Sometimes what seems right is really a road to death. Proverbs 16:25 Man-made religion, Isaiah The Lord has said: “These people praise me with their words, but they never really think about me. They worship me by repeating rules made up by humans. Isaiah 29:13 Religion personal roles Digging their own cisterns You, my people, have sinned in two ways—you have rejected me, the source of life-giving water, and you’ve tried to collect water in cracked and leaking pits dug in the ground. Jeremiah 2:13 Idols in heart One day, some of Israel’s leaders came to me and asked for a message from the Lord. While they were there, the Lord said: Ezekiel, son of man, these men have started worshiping idols, though they know it will cause them to sin even more. Religion personal roles So I refuse to give them a message! Tell the people of Israel that if they sin by worshiping idols and then go to a prophet to find out what I say, I will give them the answer their sins deserve. When they hear my message, maybe they will see that they need to turn back to me and stop worshiping those idols.

Now, Ezekiel, tell everyone in Israel: I am the Lord God. Stop worshiping your disgusting idols and come back to me. Suppose one of you Israelites or a foreigner living in Israel rejects me and starts worshiping idols. If you then go to a prophet to find out what I say, I will answer by turning against you. Religion personal roles I will make you a warning to anyone who might think of doing the same thing, and you will no longer belong to my people. Then you will know that I am the Lord and that you have sinned against me. If a prophet gives a false message, I am the one who caused that prophet to lie. But I will still reject him and cut him off from my people, and anyone who goes to that prophet for a message will be punished in the same way. Religion personal roles I will do this, so that you will come back to me and stop destroying yourselves with these disgusting sins.

So turn back to me! Then I will be your God, and you will be my people. I, the Lord God, make this promise. Ezekiel 14:1-11 Those who say, “Lord, Lord Not everyone who calls me their Lord will get into the kingdom of heaven. Only the ones who obey my Father in heaven will get in. On the day of judgment many will call me their Lord. They will say, “We preached in your name, and in your name we forced out demons and worked many miracles.” But I will tell them, “I will have nothing to do with you! Get out of my sight, you evil people!” Matthew 7:21-23 Picking grain on Sabbath One Sabbath, Jesus and his disciples were walking through some wheat fields. Religion personal roles His disciples were hungry and began picking and eating grains of wheat. Some Pharisees noticed this and said to Jesus, “Why are your disciples picking grain on the Sabbath? They are not supposed to do that!” Religion personal roles Jesus answered: You surely must have read what David did when he and his followers were hungry. He went into the house of God, and then they ate the sacred loaves of bread that only priests are supposed to eat. Haven’t you read in the Law of Moses that the priests are allowed to work in the temple on the Sabbath? But no one says that they are guilty of breaking the law of the Sabbath.

I tell you that there is something here greater than the temple. Don’t you know what the Scriptures mean when they say, “Instead of offering sacrifices to me, I want you to be merciful to others?” If you knew what this means, you would not condemn these innocent disciples of mine. So the Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath. Matthew 12:1-8 Religion personal roles Gross sinners compared to Pharisees Which one of the sons obeyed his father? “The older one,” the chief priests and leaders answered. Then Jesus told them: You can be sure that tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you ever will! When John the Baptist showed you how to do right, you would not believe him. But these evil people did believe. And even when you saw what they did, you still would not change your minds and believe. Matthew 21:31-32 Clean outside, filthy inside You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you’re in for trouble! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, while inside there is nothing but greed and selfishness. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of a cup, and then the outside will also be clean. You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You’re like tombs that have been whitewashed.

On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth. That’s what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good. Matthew 23:25-28 Religion personal roles Lip service Jesus replied: You are nothing but show-offs! The prophet Isaiah was right when he wrote that God had said, “All of you praise me with your words, but you never really think about me. It is useless for you to worship me when you teach rules made up by humans.” Mark 7:6-7 Morality, materialism As Jesus was walking down a road, a man ran up to him. He knelt down, and asked, “Good teacher, what can I do to have eternal life? ”Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? Only God is good. You know the commandments. ‘Do not murder. Be faithful in marriage. Do not steal. Do not tell lies about others. Do not cheat. Respect your father and mother.’”

The man answered, Religion personal roles “Teacher, I have obeyed all these commandments since I was a young man. ”Jesus looked closely at the man. He liked him and said, “There’s one thing you still need to do. Go sell everything you own. Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come with me.” When the man heard Jesus say this, he went away gloomy and sad because he was very rich. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “It’s hard for rich people to get into God’s kingdom!” The disciples were shocked to hear this. So Jesus told them again, “It’s terribly hard to get into God’s kingdom!" In fact, it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God’s kingdom.” Mark 10:17-25

Practice what you preach Crowds of people came out to be baptized, but John said to them, “You bunch of snakes! Who warned you to run from the coming judgment?  Do something to show that you really have given up your sins. Don’t start saying that you belong to Abraham’s family. Religion personal roles God can turn these stones into children for Abraham. Luke 3:7-8 Attitude of Pharisees toward helping others One Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a Jewish meeting place, and a woman was there who had been crippled by an evil spirit for eighteen years. She was completely bent over and could not straighten up. When Jesus saw the woman, he called her over and said, “You are now well.” He placed his hands on her, and right away she stood up straight and praised God. The man in charge of the meeting place was angry because Jesus had healed someone on the Sabbath. So he said to the people, “Each week has six days when we can work. Religion personal roles Come and be healed on one of those days, but not on the Sabbath.

”The Lord replied, “Are you trying to fool someone? Won’t any one of you untie your ox or donkey and lead it out to drink on a Sabbath? This woman belongs to the family of Abraham, but Satan has kept her bound for eighteen years. Isn’t it right to set her free on the Sabbath? ” Jesus’ words made his enemies ashamed. But everyone else in the crowd was happy about the wonderful things he was doing. Luke 13:10-17 Pharisees, tax collector   Religion personal roles Jesus told a story to some people who thought they were better than others and who looked down on everyone else: Two men went into the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood over by himself and prayed, “God, I thank you that I am not greedy, dishonest, and unfaithful in marriage like other people. And I am really glad that I am not like that tax collector over there. I go without eating for two days a week, and I give you one tenth of all I earn.” The tax collector stood off at a distance and did not think he was good enough even to look up toward heaven. He was so sorry for what he had done that he pounded his chest and prayed, “God, have pity on me! I am such a sinner.”  Religion personal roles Then Jesus said,  “When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.” Luke 18:9-14

Reading Bible in vain You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me, but you refuse to come to me for eternal life. John 5:39-40 Erroneously thinking to serve God I am telling you this to keep you from being afraid. You will be chased out of the Jewish meeting places. And the time will come when people will kill you and think they are doing God a favor. They will do these things because they don’t know either the Father or me. I am saying this to you now, so that when the time comes, you will remember what I have said. I was with you at the first, and so I didn’t tell you these things. John 16:1-4 Deity-minded, demon-motivated Athenians So Paul stood up in front of the council and said: People of Athens, I see that you are very religious. Religion personal roles As I was going through your city and looking at the things you worship, I found an altar with the words, “To an Unknown God.” You worship this God, but you don’t really know him. So I want to tell you about him. Acts 17:22-23

Pagans certain of false religion Finally, a town official made the crowd be quiet. Then he said: People of Ephesus, who in the world doesn’t know that our city is the center for worshiping the great goddess Artemis? Who doesn’t know that her image which fell from heaven is right here? No one can deny this, and so you should calm down and not do anything foolish. Acts 19:35-36 Religious knowledge insufficient The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak. But God set you free when he sent his own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used Christ’s body to condemn sin. Romans 8:3 Religion without enlightenment I know they love God, but they don’t understand Romans 10:2 Religion personal roles Proficient in religion I was a much better Jew than anyone else my own age, and I obeyed every law that our ancestors had given us. Galatians 1:14

Emptiness of mere religion Anyone who tries to please God by obeying the Law is under a curse. The Scriptures say, “Everyone who doesn’t obey everything in the Law is under a curse.” No one can please God by obeying the Law. The Scriptures also say, “The people God accepts because of their faith will live.” The Law isn’t based on faith. It promises life only to people who obey its commands. 13 But Christ rescued us from the Law’s curse, when he became a curse in our place. This is because the Scriptures say that anyone who is nailed to a tree is under a curse. And because of what Jesus Christ has done, the blessing that was promised to Abraham was taken to the Gentiles. Religion personal roles This happened so that by faith we would be given the promised Holy Spirit. Galatians 3:10-14

Mystery of our religion Here is the great mystery of our religion: Christ came as a human. The Spirit proved that he pleased God, and he was seen by angels. Christ was preached to the nations. People in this world put their faith in him, and he was taken up to glory. 1 Timothy 3:16 Gist of Christianity From Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I encourage God’s own people to have more faith and to understand the truth about religion. Then they will have the hope of eternal life that God promised long ago. And God never tells a lie! So, at the proper time, God our Savior gave this message and told me to announce what he had said. Titus 1:1-3 Religion personal roles Cheap religion If you think you are being religious, but can’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and everything you do is useless. James 1:26
